We have had a busy start to term

We have had a busy start to term with students achieving academic and wider successes.

Another set of Y11 Maths GCSE results have been secured. This gives us 41% of students who have now secured C+ in both English and Maths, meeting our expectation to be above the 40% national floor target at this point in the year. This is not the end and students are continuing to work in both subjects in order to secure even more.

We have a great deal to celebrate already this term in a range of school areas in addition to exam results. Our mixed age DebateMate team came first in Birmingham and then last week hosted a wonderful debate with and visit by the Lord Mayor of Birmingham Councillor Anita Ward. The Year 11 Young Enterprise Team Odyssey won two awards and is now through to compete citywide. Our Year 10 football team are on target for an entire year unbeaten, while our Key Stage 3 rugby team won in a recent competition. The STEM group looking at water saving recently won an award for their presentation. Congratulations are also due to our team of Year 10 prefects and student leaders, who received their badges in assembly recently as the start of their year of service to the school. As you can see we have a great deal to be proud of as a school. Those living locally will have also seen further student achievements celebrated in the papers.

Finally back to the important basics. Thank you to staff and parents/carers for their efforts in supporting our students in the day to day aspects of school life. We continue to have high expectations in all that we do, so that students can achieve to their full potential and extend their future choices. As we are about to enter the final exam period for Y11, students have a great deal to do and organise. The remaining weeks in school of preparation, revision and signing off of course work are crucial to them in order to secure the best results possible. A range of support, guidance and focused work is taking place in lessons and beyond them. It is important that all students make full use of all that is on offer to help them to do well.

As the new Head of Kingsbury School and

As the new Head of Kingsbury School and Sports College, I am delighted to welcome you to our website. I hope it provides you with useful information about our school. I am proud of the many improvements and successes the school has had in recent years and look forward to leading the school in partnership with staff, students, parents/carers and governors in the future.
At Kingsbury School we are committed to high standards, student progress and inclusion. We have an exciting learning environment, which provides support and challenge for all our students, and a dedicated team of staff and governors. This is a strong foundation on which to build, and our new Parents’ Forum is the start of the next phase of partnership working with parents/carers.
We are first and foremost a community school, and have strong links with local primary schools and the community which we serve. Our leisure centre, sports facilities and extensive grounds are well used by the community outside school hours. Our School Sports Partnership continues to produce fantastic work with local schools and our own young sports ambassadors. Indeed we are looking forward to the London 2012 Games with great excitement and have lots planned to celebrate this great sporting and cultural event.
We enjoy good links with businesses, employers and other organisations and this area continues to grow. These partnerships help us ensure that our students leave us as confident, articulate and well rounded individuals, with the skills and qualifications needed to progress in their future lives and chosen careers.
I have high expectations of myself and the people around me. What does that mean in the first few weeks of my leadership? The high expectations we set ourselves as a school community in the past will continue for all those important every day aspects of our work, including uniform, behaviour, attendance, learning and equipment (including mobiles).
I look forward to leading our journey to further success for all.

Ms C O’Driscoll

Aston Erdington & Saltley Cup U15 Final: Kingsbury

Aston Erdington & Saltley Cup U15 Final: Kingsbury 4, St Edmund Campion 1.

Kingsbury’s Year 10 team are on target for an entire year unbeaten as they came out winners against a tough St Edmund Campion side on Friday 23rd March at Villa’s training ground, Bodymoor Heath.

After an action packed first 15 minutes where both sides were competing to control the midfield, Kingsbury struck first through a low driven Remel Cockett strike. A one nil lead was then doubled shortly after the break with good work down the right from Richard Coles who crossed for Connor Forgie to head in at the back post. Both teams showed their desire to win and Edmund Campion produced a quick break down the left and converted a cross to bring them back into the game. Cameron Choudhury was excellent in the Kingsbury goal and with the help of Remi Bell and Rhys Underwood they intervened on more than one occasion to keep Kingsbury’s lead at 2-1. A cross shot from Jordan Aims dropped over the goal line before Trevelle Lewis added the fourth with a fine solo effort to seal the win. Both teams played the game with a tremendous spirit and the football played was worthy of the setting it was played in.

The last couple of weeks have been a

The last couple of weeks have been a series of ‘last times’ for me. I did my final set of year group assemblies about the value of endeavour and why it is one of our five PACER qualities. I wrote my last letter to parents and my last message for the school newsletter. Although I have been saying goodbye to people all week I am sure it will feel a little strange and quite surreal when I make my final journey up the drive on Friday and leave the place that has been like a second home to me.

Last week, our Young Enterprise group won the award for Best Customer Service at two events, one in the Gracechurch Centre and the other in the Bullring. Well done to the team and Miss Fisher. Our year 10 boys’ football team won the Saltely and District Cup, beating St Edmund Campion 4-1 in the final. Well done to the boys and Mr Brough. Last Friday we held a memorial for Rose Alexander which was attended by around fifty staff and family members. We presented a cheque for over £400 to John Taylor Hospice. We also raised over £500 for Sport Relief with a ‘dress in sports wear’ day and other activities. Thanks to Miss Walters for organising this.

This week, Mr Barton (English) and Mr Hamilton (maths) were successful in achieving Advanced Skills Teacher (AST) status. This is a tremendous accolade as it is only awarded to those teachers who are outstanding. Well done to both of them and thanks to all the staff and students who supported their applications. A group of year 8 scientists went to Loughborough University and had a great time looking at science in sport. They were also very excited to see some of the GB Olympic team. Year 9 went on in a history trip to Birmingham University where they won the history quiz.

There is so much that I am proud of about Kingsbury: the improved exam results; our last Ofsted inspection; the Astroturf and other work that has been done to the site; the vast majority of students who are great ambassadors for our school; the work that we do through the Sports Partnership and primary links; the debating team, who are riding high in the national league; Young Enterprise; STEM, our sports teams and individual students who have achieved great success. None of this would have happened without an immense amount of hard work from the Kingsbury staff and students and the support of parents, carers and the wider community. I wish Kingsbury and everyone connected with the school every success in the future. Thanks for the memories.
